Restroom spaces are often the subject of compromises when designing public buildings. According to a survey conducted by Wuoma for designers, the design and implementation of restrooms involve many stakeholders, from cleaning personnel to end-users. Each party has their own perspective, and the designer’s original vision does not always make it into the final result. Additionally, the equipment budget may already be spent by the time restrooms are equipped – typically when the building is completed. As a result, restroom solutions often fail to align with the building’s overall aesthetic or the space’s intended purpose.
CEO Petri Ruohonen summarizes the company’s philosophy as follows:
“The restroom is typically one of the few spaces in a building that your guests will definitely visit. It serves as a business card, so its appearance and feel matter. Furthermore, the restroom is often the only place where a person can briefly escape the hustle and bustle of work or family life. For this reason, the design of restrooms is extremely important.”
Details make the space
The calm atmosphere of the restroom is created by carefully considered details – this is where Wuoma focuses its efforts.
“We wanted to create restroom fixtures that are not only practical but also beautiful and pleasant to the touch. Small details, such as the quality of materials and finishing, can make a huge difference in the user experience,” says Ruohonen.

New opportunities for architects
Traditionally, architects have had limited options when designing restroom spaces. Standard fixtures, such as plastic or metal products, do not always support the overall design vision. However, Wuoma has changed this by offering alternatives that are both beautiful, practical, and cost-effective.
“We offer architects more freedom. Wuoma’s fixtures are not just practical solutions; they help elevate the entire space. With them, it is possible to design restrooms that are an integral part of the building’s aesthetic as a whole,” says Ruohonen.
Restroom spaces to a new level
Wuoma’s goal is to make restrooms more than just necessary stopovers – they can be a significant part of the user’s positive experience in a public building.
“For us, a restroom is not just a technical solution, but a meaningful space. When the space is carefully designed and the fixtures support peace and harmony, it is visible and felt by the users,” Ruohonen summarizes.
Wuoma aims to continue the conversation with designers and architects, helping elevate restrooms to a new level by combining design and functionality. According to CEO Ruohonen, the goal is for restrooms to no longer be overlooked, but instead become an integral part of the building’s finest features.
“Beauty, sustainability, and practicality are not opposites. We strive to combine them in every product we make,” Ruohonen assures.
